Federici fires for Bournemouth in penalty shootout

Socceroos goalkeeper Adam Federici was the hero for Bournemouth as the Premier League outfit defeated Preston North End on penalties in League Cup action on Tuesday.

Federici saved the spot kicks of Jordan Hugill, Alan Browne and Daniel Johnson, as the Cherries won the shootout 3-2 after it ended 2-2 following extra-time.

Earlier, Preston had twice come from behind, firstly to send the match into extra-time late in the second half, before equalising again in the dying stages of the extra period to send the clash to penalties.

With Federici's fellow Socceroos shot-stoppers Mat Ryan and Mitch Langerak currently nursing injuries, the 30-year-old is expected to start in goals for Australia in their World Cup Qualifier against Jordan in Amman on October 8.
