Fairweather leaves Sunderland academy post for women's job

Sunderland academy coach Carlton Fairweather has been named new head coach of Sunderland AFC Ladies.

The former Wimbledon midfielder, who joined Sunderland's staff in 2003, takes charge of the side as it begins pre-season training ahead of the start of WS1 in March.

Carlton, 42, spent the majority of his playing career with Wimbledon, chalking up 138 league appearances. He also spent a brief spell at Carlisle and played and coached in Hong Kong and the USA, before embarking on a coaching role with the Dons.

He joined Sunderland AFC in October 2003, working initially with the club's community football scheme, before progressing to the academy set-up, where he worked as youth development phase lead coach.
