FA Women’s Super League: Man City and Man Utd share the spoils

Man Utd have still to beat rivals Man City in the WSL but fully deserved this 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Utd have an impressive away record in the WSL and were fully deserved of their 1-0 half-time advantage over rivals Man City.

The goal on 27 mins was the result of a fine team move which ended with Leah Galton slightly scuffing her shot which took a deflection before finding the back of the net. This strike is the first goal that United have scored in a Manchester derby at City's ground in the Women's Super League.

City had looked sluggish throughout struggling to create any meaningful chances, not helped by misplaced or overhit passes. The hosts had a flurry of early corners which causes Utd problems, former Red Alex Greenwood hit the wall from a direct free kick and Lauren Hemp and Deyna Castellanos had long range efforts comfortably saved.

Utd meanwhile grew into theme and looked dangerous on the break. Ella Toone was allowed to advance against a retreating City defence but finished with a weak shot and on the stroke of the interval Hayley Ladd was unmarked but lacked composure and blazed over.

Utd pressed after the break and Greenwood almost headed an own goal from a dangerous cross whilst the Old Trafford outfit continued to control the game with City continuing to labour.

Then against the run of play City levelled on 59 mins. Chloe Kelley sent over a cross which the Utd defence struggled to clear and Laura Coombs stooped to head the equaliser. Goal provider Kelly almost became goalscorer but her two efforts flew over the cross bar.

Back came Utd and from a quick break Alessia Russo fired narrowly wide, then from a similar situation glanced a header over.

City and joint leading WSL scorer Khadija Shaw had her first chance of the afternoon but the header was smartly saved by Mary Earps. Then it was City keeper Ellie Roebuck who kept her team in the game with a brilliant reflex stop.

Chances came and went for both sides in a frenetic last ten minutes but neither was able to take advantage and the game ended level leaving City still trailing their neighbours who will feel happy with the point.
