FA to investigate missile thrown at Wigan keeper Kirkland

The Football Association have launched an investigation after Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was struck by a missile from the away section on Saturday. Kirkland was believed to be hit by a coin, during Wigan's Premier League clash at home to Burnley.

The FA will speak to referee Mike Jones and his officials after reading his report and both clubs will be contacted for their observations.

A spokesman said: "The first priority from our point of view would be ensuring any individual responsible was identified and we would like to see anyone found guilty of coin-throwing to be banned from attending football matches in this country.

"We are working with the clubs and the police to ensure this happens."

Kirkland was struck on the top of the head in the 53rd minute of the contest, which was won 1-0 by Wigan with an injury-time Hugo Rodallega goal.
