FA CUP 3rd ROUND WRAP: Liverpool edge Plymouth, Southampton and Newcastle through

Liverpool progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup courtesy of a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle ton night.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds got the job done at Home Park thanks to a first-half header from Lucas Leiva.

The Brazilian got on the end of compatriot Philippe Coutinho's corner in the 18th minute to score his first goal in more than six years.

Plymouth striker Jake Gervis had a great chance to equalise on 75 minutes but his acrobatic effort clipped the outside of the upright with Loris Karius beaten.

Divock Origi had a late penalty saved by Pilgrims keeper and captain Luke McCormick to give the home side some semblance of hope but there was not enough time to deny the Reds.

The Merseyside club will now host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on January 28.

Southampton have booked a home fixture against Arsenal, who they dumped from the EFL Cup, after edging Norwich City 1-0 at St Mary's.

Claude Puel's Saints struggled all night before Shane Long managed to squeeze home an injury-time rebound after his initial header had been kept out by Michael McGovern.

And Newcastle United are safely through to the next phase after beating Birmingham City 3-1 at St James' Park.

Rafa Benitez's Magpies skipped away to a two-goal lead in the first half after Matt Ritchie converted from the penalty spot early and Yoan Gouffran scored in the 34th minute.

David Cotterill pulled one back for the Blues on 71 minutes before Ritchie restored the two-goal advantage in injury-time.

Newcastle will now travel to League OneOxford United on January 28.
