Exclusive: Valencia great Claramunt recalls Revie's 'tough' Leeds - and big Jackie

Valencia great Pep Claramunt can still recall facing Don Revie's Leeds United back in 1967.

On the eve of Leeds' return to the Premier League this weekend, Claramunt admits he can still vivedly remember facing the Yorkshire giants in the UEFA Cup.

Claramunt, now 74, made 381 appearances for Los Che in a career where he crossed swords with English opposition on several occasions. And he admits among the most memorable was their meeting with Leeds.

Leeds would emerge triumphant over the two legs, with midfielder Claramunt facing Elland Road legends Billy Bremner, Johnny Giles and Norman Hunter. But he admits it was an English player at the back - fresh from winning the World Cup the previous year - who stood out for him.

Claramunt told Tribalfootball.com: “They had a hard reputation and there was lot of physical contact and we played at night against Leeds.

“It had been rainy so the pitch was damp and the ball was faster, which suited my style of football perfectly…instead of the dryer pitches in Valencia because of the weather. I was a good dribbler and I had good ability on-the-ball so the faster pace of English football suited my style of playing.

“I always like the style of English football and the way they played, more physical and a faster rhythm too. I remember Norman Hunter's influence in the matches but the player I remember most for Leeds was Jackie Charlton who was Bobby Charlton's brother.

“He wasn't the fastest of players but he was very strong and tall and Jackie made my life difficult on the pitch! He was an icon at Leeds and I understand that he played for Leeds for all of his club career. I can also see certain similarities regarding Leeds United and Valencia CF as clubs over the years."

Charlton proved a one club man for Leeds, playing over 21 years with the Yorkshire giants. He won a First Division title and FA Cup with Leeds. The English great passed away earlier this year at the age of 85.
