EXCLUSIVE: Uncovering Real Madrid summer transfer plans (& policy shift)

Real Madrid are always front and centre when transfer tales and gossip surround the world's brightest players and since their transfer ban was reduced the frenzy has continued unabated, but just how much movement will there be at the Santiago Bernabéu this summer?

The likes of David de Gea, Thibaut Courtois, Paulo Dybala, Sergio Agüero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang only scratches the surface when it comes to players linked to the club already as the media and fans lap all the rumours surrounding Los Merengues.

It could be, though, that the days of Galactico spending and buying players for marketing value are over as president Florentino Pérez and head coach Zinedine Zidane accept that stability is the key to future success.

Last summer Real Madrid faced the prospect of it being the last time they could buy players until January 2018 and cool heads prevailed as the squad was adjusted rather than radically altered and it could be the same again come the end of the current campaign.

Having been banned for two transfer windows for breaching rules over the transfer of foreign players under 18, Los Merengues appealed and they saw the ban reduced to just one window and their fine reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“Zidane does not want to disrupt what he is constructing, but instead will look to build and improve on his squad," a reporter for daily sports paper AS told me.

“He is also sympathetic to those that he does not play regularly and will review their situations, but will hold firm on the players he thinks will have a bright future in his side."

Before this term kicked off the Madrid trainer tweaked his frontline as one youth team product was swapped for another. Jesé Rodríguez was sold to Paris Saint-Germain and Álvaro Morata was bought back from Juventus. It will be deals such as those that will and, perhaps, should highlight the movements of summer 2017.

Madrid supporters that I have spoken to are against a return to the days of lavish spending to produce a squad top heavy with star names and would like sensible additions allied with promotion from within.

A perfect example is who will replace China-bound Pepe and very few fans will be unhappy that La Fábrica (The Factory), as Madrid's youth academy is dubbed, products Diego Llorente, currently on loan at Málaga, and Jesús Vallejo, currently on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, are the favourites to step up.

Another position that will require bolstering is left-back with Fábio Coentrão set to leave and my contact with AS believes that the likes of Mario Hermoso could be promoted permanently to the first team squad to cover for Marcelo.

It is the position behind the back four, or back three these days, that has been hogging the headlines recently and it is two former Atlético de Madrid keepers in Chelsea's Courtois and Manchester United custodian De Gea who could be one of the signings.

Whether Los Merengues' aficionados believe that a goalkeeper is a necessity this year given the form and consistency of Keylor Navas has not prevented the speculation going into overdrive and it could be that one of the two does arrive to push the Costa Rican down the pecking order.

It is, of course, further up the field that sees headlines make it across every newspaper or website as the changes in midfield or up front is what excites everyone.

Isco's and James Rodríguez's futures dominate in the centre of the park, while Álvaro Morata's position at the club is also under almost daily discussion.

“It does look like Isco is set to leave as he become unsettled being unable to command a place in the starting side when Zidane has his first-choice 11 available," the AS reporter continued.

“His contract is due to expire in 2018 and while he could hold on and begin organising a free transfer in just under a year, the club and he are mooting a move away this summer. The problem is that Isco thinks that whoever he joins will be a step down.

“James is a curious case because Zidane likes him and wants to fit him in knowing that he can add something as well as it being a challenge for the coach. If he can make the player achieve his potential at Madrid then everyone would come out looking great."

The striker issue is a tricky one as Madrid have their infamous BBC trio of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo and anybody coming in would be seen as back-up, much like Paco Alcácer when he joined Barcelona last summer.

Morata has had his chance to show what he can do this season, but has also seen that whenever Benzema is fit he returns to the bench.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with the 24-year-old Spain international and it would be a good fit, but there is also the thought, and risk, that if he stays one more season then that could see him take over from Benzema as the first choice in the number nine role.

Should he leave then Sergio Agüero is an unlikely replacement, while Juventus' forward Paulo Dybala can almost virtually be ruled out along with Borussia Dortmund's Aubameyang as none would commit to joining to play second fiddle to the BBC.

Porto's Andre Silva is more interesting and more likely as he would be prepared to fight for a place as would Ajax's Kasper Dolberg, who many claim to be almost a complete striker and, most certainly, a star for the future.

“There could be a surprise because a defensive midfielder is required, but whether the answer lies from within or a signing has to be made, is one issue, while Zidane wanted Paul Pogba last summer and could demand another attacking midfielder this year," my source at AS concluded.

Developing players and buying big names has always been Pérez's plan as the Galacticos and Pavones idea at the start of the Millennium showed and now maybe he has a head coach who has the faith and confidence in La Fábrica to regularly promote from within while adding sensibly using the transfer market.
