Exclusive: Newcastle hero Clark backs Longstaff joining Everton - 'Good move for all parties'

Newcastle United legend Lee Clark believes Sean Longstaff's mooted transfer to Everton could work for all parties involved.

Longstaff spent time on loan at Kilmarnock - under Clark's management - and Blackpool before breaking into the Newcastle first-team in December 2018.

The future looked bright for Longstaff as he thrived under the tutelage of Rafa Benitez for the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign.

However, the 23-year-old has seen his career stall over the past two campaigns with Steve Bruce in the dugout, managing just 22 league appearances last season.

Everton manager Benitez has looked at reuniting with Longstaff at Goodison Park this summer, per the Daily Mail, while Southampton have also shown interest.

Toon have reportedly slapped a £10m price-tag on the 22-year-old, and club hero Clark thinks everyone could benefit from the transfer getting done before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Writing in his column for TribalFootball.com, Clark said: "I think when you're in someone in Sean Longstaff's position, the proof is in the pudding. The manager isn't really picking him on a regular basis, and that means that for your own career that you need to move on.

"There's a manager there in Rafa Benitez who obviously knows everything about Sean, giving him his debut and seeing him develop into a good strong young player.

"Everton is a big club with a fantastic history and it could suit everyone.

"It could suit Sean moving away from his home and going to play for a big club. It could raise funds for Newcastle and Steve to go and use elsewhere."

He added: "When you're in Steve's position, when things are tight, sometimes you have to wheel and deal and move people out to bring people in.

"It all depends on the valuation from both clubs but I personally think that it would be a very good move for all parties; for Everton, for Sean, for Newcastle and for Steve to reinvest in the team."

Sean's younger brother, Matty, left St. James' Park last week on a season-long loan with Aberdeen.
