Exclusive: Man Utd hero Blackmore urges Solskjaer to sign another forward despite Cavani contract

FA Cup winner Clayton Blackmore believes Manchester United need another centre-forward.

The Red Devils tied down veteran striker Edinson Cavani for another season early in the transfer window.

Despite Cavani's new deal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said United would still be open to signing a new striker.

"I am very happy that it has happened," Solskjaer told TV2.

"But that does not mean that we are not looking for someone who can challenge or learn from him [Cavani]."

However, United's immediate interest in a top-ranked striker has waned as the new season starts next week.

They were previously linked with Borussia Dortmund youngster Erling Haaland and Tottenham star Harry Kane prior to Cavani's commitment.

But according to United hero Blackmore, Solskjaer should try and bolster his attack for the 2021/22 campaign.

"I still think United need another centre-forward," Blackmore, who won the Premier League title with United in 1993, told TribalFootball.com, on behalf of BonusFinder.

"Cavani is still one of the best in the world right now along with Lewandowski and Haaland.

"I don't know the situation with Haaland, but you'd take him because he's fast, he's powerful and he's a great finisher.

"It would be great if we could sign him, but we have got Mason Greenwood who should be playing down the middle."

The Red Devils have spent £73m to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

The England winger has signed a five-year contract with his new club after a long transfer saga.

World Cup winning defender Raphael Varane is also expected to join after United agreed a £41m plus add-ons deal with Real Madrid.

Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton was signed as a free agent to provide competition for David De Gea and Dean Henderson.
