Exclusive: Lawrenson claims Liverpool forwards put on notice with Luis Diaz arrival

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson believes the acquisition of Luis Diaz will worry the likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

The Reds beat rivals Tottenham to pull off the biggest coup of the January transfer window when they signed Colombia striker Diaz from Porto in a deal worth £50m.

The 25-year-old has lit up the Portuguese Primeira for the past three seasons and impressed Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp when Porto played at Anfield in November last year.

Diaz scored 41 goals in 125 appearances for Porto

Diaz will now get a chance to showcase his talent in the Premier League, and Reds great Lawrenson thinks Klopp has boosted his squad with a 'great signing'.

Asked if Mane or Firmino should be worried about Diaz's arrival, Lawrenson told TribalFootball.com, on behalf of FreeSuperTips: "I think they'll all be worried because he's a proper player.

"I've seen him play twice against Liverpool in the Champions League, especially the game at Anfield where he was a real handful.

"I think he can play across the three forward positions which is a bonus, but the thing now is there's competition for places.

"We've seen how well Jota has done; he was a signing out of the blue in many ways because it wasn't flagged up by anybody.

Diaz is now an important player for Colombia

"Next thing you know, he's signed for Liverpool, and he's been brilliant.

"It gives them five or six options if you include Origi in there for players who can play in the front three, so it's all good for Liverpool.

"Diaz is someone who's quick, tricky, a goal scorer and he'll be helped to settle in with Jota who can obviously speak Portuguese.

"I think it's a really good signing for Liverpool."

Klopp was understandably delighted after the club had secured Diaz on a five-and-a-half year contract.

Speaking to the club's website, Klopp said: "I have always been a believer in only signing players in January if you would want to sign them in the summer, and that's very much the case with Luis.

"He is an outstanding player and someone we've been tracking for a very long time.

"Luis is a player we believe will make us better now and in the future. He is the player we really wanted and they've made it happen, so I am very happy."

Liverpool will make their return from the international break against Cardiff City in the FA Cup fourth-round on Sunday.

It is unclear if Diaz will make his debut this weekend given he has spent the past two weeks with Colombia.
