Exclusive: Friedel confident Blackburn possess enough quality for promotion - but luck needed

Blackburn Rovers goalkeeping legend Brad Friedel believes the club have enough quality to win promotion to the Premier League.

Friedel was a stalwart for Rovers during their long run in the Premier League, making over 250 appearances in the competition over seven seasons.

The 1994/95 champions have not played in the top-flight since 2012, but Tony Mowbray's side have supporters believing again.

Up against teams aided by parachute payments, Blackburn are currently sitting four points behind second-placed Bournemouth, although the Cherries possess three games in hand on their challengers.

In his first season at Rovers back in 2000/01, former USA international Friedel played a pivotal role in the club winning promotion back to the Premier League.

And although Friedel is confident about Blackburn's quality, he knows they'll need every bit of luck to get out of the league.

Asked if Blackburn could win promotion, the 50-year-old told TribalFootball.com, on behalf of bet365: "I hope so, the Championship is such a strange league sometimes. There are so many games where your destiny is decided on a shot hitting the post or it going in, a referee's decision for you or against you, injury or suspension at the right or wrong times and a lot of the teams are on a similar level when it comes to quality.

"When it comes to the play-offs, a lot of teams who have sneaked into 5th or 6th on recent form have the advantage going into it and not necessarily the teams who were better over the course of the season.

"So, do Blackburn have the quality? Yes, but they need a few things to fall their way, too. Hopefully if they're in the mix at the send of the season, they can get their players mentally and physically set for the play-off run in, because it's a tough old league to get out of."
