Exclusive: Ex-Sampdoria defender Rossi insists Giampaolo ready for AC Milan

Hungary manager Marco Rossi has told Tribalfootball that Marco Giampaolo can succeed at AC Milan.

51-year-old Giampaolo became one of the most sought after managers in Serie A during an impressive three-year stint with Sampdoria.

Giampaolo thrived in Genoa, showing his skill at developing talented players such as Dennis Praet and Joachim Andersen, while working with a minuscule budget.

With Milan failing to qualify for the Champions League for the sixth successive season, Gennaro Gattuso was ousted from the dugout at the end of May.

While not boasting an impressive playing career, Giampaolo has followed in the footsteps of peers such as Maurizio Sarri by climbing his way through the rigours of Italian football.

The Italian's first managerial role was with Ascoli in 2004, which led to spells with Cagliari, Siena, Catania, Cesena, Brescia, Cremonese, Empoli before arriving at Sampdoria in 2016.

None of those roles brought the amount of pressure Giampaolo will feel at the San Siro, with a Rossoneri fan-base dying to see their club return to their once lofty heights.

In the opinion of former Sampdoria and Brescia defender Rossi, Giampaolo is ready for the role.

He said: "Giampaolo, for years, has been one of the best in Italy.

"Now has the big chance. I'm sure he won't let it slip."

Rossi spent two successful years at Sampdoria during his long and peripatetic playing career.

He played 25 games for Sampdoria between 1993 and 1995, during which time the club collected its last major trophy, the 1994 Coppa Italia.

Under the leadership of Sven Goran Eriksson, Rossi watched on as teammates Ruud Gullit, David Platt, Roberto Mancini and Attilio Lombardo fired Sampdoria to glory over Ancona.

Rossi can't speak highly enough of Eriksson's squad assembled at the Marassi, joking that he was definitely less talented than his teammates.

He added: "That Sampdoria (93/94 and 94 / 95), I think it was second only to that of the Scudetto, for technical values.

"Difficult to think of what those players could have done in today's football. Out of 20 players in the squad, at least half were those who today people consider top players.

"Needless to say, I was part of the other half (laughs)."
