Exclusive: Babbel claims 'mindset' behind Konate, Keita struggles at Liverpool

Liverpool legend Markus Babbel insists Ibrahima Konate must adjust his mindset to be successful at Anfield.

The French centre-back was signed from RB Leipzig for £36m last summer, but has so far had to bide his time on Merseyside.

Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip have been Jurgen Klopp's first choice centre-back pairing for most of the season.

Konate scored in the Champions League quarter-final win over Benfica on Tuesday, but he has been restricted to just eight Premier League starts.

Babbel says there is a reason why RB Leipzig players have struggled when moving to bigger clubs.

Konate's teammate Naby Keita still hasn't lived up to his 53m price-tag since leaving the Bundesliga, while Bayern Munich duo Dayot Upamecano have also struggled.

And Babbel, who won Euro96 with Germany, thinks Leipzig's lack the necessary mindset to succeed immediately at big clubs.

"All the players who left Leipzig they have massive problems in the first year," Babbel told TribalFootball.com, on behalf of bet365.

"This is unbelievable. Keita from Leipzig to Liverpool, Konate. Upamecano to Bayern Munich, Sabitzer. He was the captain of Leipzig. They have so much problems to understand how a massive club works. The competition is there. You have van Dijk, Matip, Gomez. They are all fantastic players. But you have to say, 'hey this is my position'.

"So your mindset at the moment is not strong enough. Keita is in a good way now, Konate is in a good way. But if I watch Bayern Munich, Upamecano and Sabitzer are having massive problems with the mindset. You see technically they are top, physically they are top, they bring with them.

"But the mindset is not 100 per cent right and they need to work on this because both clubs are massive, the pressure is different to Leipzig, many more good players on the pitch and you have fight for your position. This is hard work on your brain. You have to tell yourself every day that he is not taking my spot, that's my spot. This mentality is what you have to learn."
