Exclusive: Arsenal legend Winterburn hits back over calls for Arteta dismissal

Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn has urged the club to stick with manager Mikel Arteta.

After a summer overhaul, which saw £150m spent on new players, the Gunners remain in serious contention for a top-four spot at the halfway point of the season.

Arteta's side are two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United and possess a game in hand over the Red Devils.

What has excited supporters this term is the fact that Arsenal have had the average youngest starting XI across the Premier League at 24 years 230 days.

The relative inexperience in the Arsenal squad has brought about inconsistent results, including a goalless draw with Burnley prior to the international break.

But Gunners great Winterburn believes those results are not a reflection of what Arteta is building at the Emirates.

"I think he's learning all the time and there's been a bigger shift to Mikel Arteta's popularity than there was at the start of the season," Winterburn told TribalFootball.com, on behalf of FreeSuperTips.

"The last few games we've seen people come out and say he still isn't the right guy, but I'm not a big believer in changing your managers.

"It's clear to me what we're trying to do, bring in younger players, develop them and build a stronger squad.

"I've been clear all season, we're going to get some outstanding and exciting performances, but we're also going to get results like we saw against Burnley and to a certain extent against Man United and Everton.

"It will be frustrating, but we're seeing progression and if we're still fighting for fourth come the end of the season, then I think it shows progression.

"Then we look to the summer to see who leaves and who Mikel Arteta can bring in because there's still players in the squad who need to be rotated around.

"If the club think it's the right thing to do, then I'm happy with that and I love watching the younger players come into the team.

"Sometimes you do get those performances which frustrate you and you think it's a wasted opportunity, but it's a learning curve for these players."

Arsenal will face a confident Wolves team at Molineux on Thursday February 10.

They then take on Brentford and Watford before a blockbuster clash with Leicester City on March 13.
