Steve Clarke wants a management job.
The former West Ham United and Chelsea assistant manager rejected an offer to return to Newcastle United as Chris Hughton's new No2.
It is understood that Clarke was Hughton's first choice but he is looking to become his own club boss, says the Daily Mail.
The move for Clarke, who was also assistant to Ruud Gullit at St James's Park, did not have the backing of the Newcastle board.
Club sources indicate they would prefer to see new reserve team coach Peter Beardsley promoted from within but Hughton is looking outside the club for Colin Calderwood's successor.
