Ex-Watford boss Taylor: Cummins made club millions rescuing Villa ace Young

Former Watford boss Graham Taylor says the Hornets owe plenty to their ex-youth coach Chris Cummins.

It was Cummins who rescued Villa star Ashley Young from the scrapheap at Watford.

Former Villa boss Taylor remembers the pair during his second spell in charge at Vicarage Road between 1997-2001.

"The youth team coach Chris Cummings had a lot to do with Ashley Young's development," Taylor told the Sunday Mercury.

"After I left, they were going to release him and it was only through Chris - and Ashley himself - that they kept him on amateur forms.

"For six months, Ashley kept going to the club, rather than getting another job, and proved he was well worth a contract.

"Watford owe a lot to Chris for getting that money for Ashley.

"Martin O'Neill admitted at the time that he probably paid too much - but it's already been proved that he didn't."
