Ex-Sunderland boss Crosby takes charge of Gateshead

Former Sunderland boss Malcolm Crosby as been named new manager of Gateshead.

Crosby, 61 next month, had followed Lee Clark from Birmingham City to Blackpool where he was head of player recruitment, but is now back in football management.

Gateshead chairman Graham Wood told the Evening Chronicle: "I go back a long way with Malcolm as I was vice-chairman at Sunderland when he got us to the FA Cup final in 1992 and I'm confident he'll do a good job at Gateshead.

"He is a well known and highly respected figure throughout football, as well as an excellent coach with a reputation for developing young players.

"The work of assembling a squad for another promotion push will commence on Monday, when the manager will begin meeting with existing players."
