Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is surprised by Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney's decision to announce his international retirement date.
Redknapp wrote for the London Evening Standard: "Wayne probably wants to go out on his own terms.
"He'll have the goal record and probably the overall caps record so I suppose the only reason to carry on beyond 2018 is if England look like they have a team capable of finally winning a trophy at international level. If that is the case then he might change his mind but to confirm his plans so far before the tournament suggests he has been thinking about it for a while.
"It would also help him prolong his career at club level with Manchester United and maybe that will become his priority as time passes but 32 years of age — as he'll be in Russia — still seems a bit early to call it a day."
