Ex-River Plate, Estudiantes striker Fernandez nets on Portland Timbers debut

Gaston Fernandez scored on his MLS debut as Portland Timbers drew 1-1 with Philadelphia Union on the weekend.

The 30-year old Argentine striker, who joined from Estudiantes La Plata in January, scored in stoppage time as the Timbers forced a draw at the newly-named Providence Park following Jack McInerney's 64th-minute opener for the Union.

Fernandez was on hand to head home Will Johnson's corner, which had deflected off a Union defender, at the back post in the 94th minute.

The Timbers attracted 20,674 fans to their MLS 2014 season opener making it a 52nd consecutive home sellout for the Western Conference outfit.
