Ex-Real Madrid president Calderon blasts Florentino stadium plans: Fans will be angry

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has slammed successor Florentino Perez over plans to renovate the Santiago Bernabeu.

Calderon is convinced Florentino's intentions will hurt the squad.

He declared: "Florentino has a megalomaniac obsession with remodeling the stadium we have, which is now magnificent. I managed to get the Champions League final in 2009 because UEFA considered it to be one of the two or three best stadiums in Europe.

"Nobody has complained about the stadium. He now wants to spend €575m. And this is spending, not investing, because people do not need it. It is a magnificent stadium, with modern facilities.

"This will also lead him not to invest in players. The fans care about the content and not the continent. People want to celebrate in Cibeles the titles and not celebrate a model with a very nice stadium . The Bernabéu stadium is an icon for the city of Madrid. Maybe you can need some retouching, but never a remodeling that has such a high cost."
