Ex-PSV star urges De Ligt to choose Liverpool

Former PSV Eindhoven winger Rene van der Gijp wants to see Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt join Liverpool.

He believes it would benefit Dutch football in the long run if he partnered Virgil van Dijk for both club and country.

The Ajax captain is expected to be one of the most sought after players in the summer transfer window with Barcelona, Manchester United and Juventus all reportedly interested.

But Van der Gijp wants De Ligt to join Liverpool so he can play alongside Van Dijk at Anfield.

The former Netherlands winger told Voetbal Primeur: “It would be great for Dutch football if those two defenders can play alongside each other for five to six years. “Then you are getting the best centre-back pairing in Europe."

Van Dijk has said of De Ligt: "A big club like Liverpool has so many scouts looking around, they will keep an eye on him.

"If they want to know something, I'll hear about it."
