Ex-Novara primavera coach Gattuso: After one training session I knew Man Utd star Fernandes didn't belong with us

Former Novara primavera coach Giacomo Gattuso has spoken of working with Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes played for Novara, Udinese and Sampdoria in Italy before making it big with Sporting CP.

Gattuso recalled to TMW: "He had come to play for the Primavera team, but at the first training session I saw that he was a player who had little to do with us, in the sense that he was really superior and you could see from the way he touched the ball. A very thin kid, who had little of the modern player.

"He was a mental talent, temperamental. A boy who from the first day wanted to be a real footballer, tried in every training to improve himself and that's what he did. And today he is an important player in one of the most important teams in the world. The result of those who are not satisfied and want to improve.

"We spoke in May-June of last year. Out of character I don't feel like disturbing him. It is right that he goes on his way. I often hear his interviews and every time he speaks with great humility. And he understands perfectly why he arrived, where he arrived."
