Ex-Newcastle, Sunderland, Birmingham defender Caldwell impressed by MLS standard

Toronto FC defender Steven Caldwell admits the standard of MLS has impressed him since he moved to North America.

The 33-year old Scottish centre-back, who has played with such clubs as Newcastle United, Sunderland, Burnley and Wigan Athletic, landed in Ontario from Birmingham City in May 2013.

Despite Toronto struggling in the 2013 MLS season, Caldwell had enjoyed his debut campaign in the burgeoning American and Canadian competition.

"I'm really enjoying the experience and going to different cities and I have been impressed with the quality in the league, too," Caldwell said on Soccer AM.

"Improvements are being made, things are building all the time and the number of teams is increasing, so it's a very exciting time to be part of that process.

"It's not THE sport in North America but it's a popular sport - especially in multicultural Toronto - and if we can get things right on the pitch, it will be a fabulous place to be playing."
