Ex-Newcastle defender Howey urges supporters to be careful with their Ashley wishes

Ex-Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has claimed that club owner Mike Ashley hasn't done brilliantly and also urged the club fans to be careful about what they wish for.

A majority of Magpies fans want billionaire owner Ashley out after continuing to run the club as a cash cow for his own interests and failing to place any real investment into the team which is free-falling towards the Premier League's bottom three.

Of the Ashley situation, Howey said: "I don't think Ashley has done brilliantly, but at the same time he could sell up and Newcastle could turn into a Portsmouth or a Leeds.

Howey also urged Newcastle fans to be careful about what they wish and pointed out former manager Alan Pardew, who has succeeded since his move to Crystal Palace, as an example. "I always said through the Alan Pardew campaign, 'Be careful what you wish for'. Even though it's dreadful at the moment, financially they're on an even keel," Howey added.
