Former Newcastle United coach John Carver hopes Andy Carroll can handle the pressure of being the club's No9.
It was Carver who transformed Carroll from a left-back to centre-forward while working with Toon's academy setup.
Carver, now Peter Reid's No 2 at Plymouth Argyle, knows the significance of the shirt Carroll will wear for the first time tonight.
He told the Daily Mail: "It is quite an incredible reward because it is usually given to someone who is a proven goalscorer at the top level. It is a huge honour for a player who has come through the system and, as a local lad, It will mean a hell of a lot to him.
"But with the shirt comes pressure and I just hope he can handle that."
