Ex-Man Utd skipper Neville: Salford so important to me

Gary Neville says the potential purchase of Salford City FC is extremely important to him.

The former Manchester United captain is among a group of five old Red Devils who are on the verge of acquiring the non-league outfit.

Along with twin brother Phil, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, Neville is set to turn his hand at club ownership - albeit at a low level - but he is hopping to give back to the area which gave him his start in the game almost three decades ago.

"I had my first trial for Manchester United in Salford at age 11 and I will never forget how important that was to me," Neville said in a statement regarding the takeover.

"Salford City FC, to me, represents those early years, the commitment, hunger, enthusiasm, desire and spirit of football and I am very excited about this venture."
