Ex-Man Utd Meulensteen: Kane signing would catapult title challenge

Former Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen has urged the club to sign Harry Kane.

The Dutchman, who was at United under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes the club still lacks a reliable number 9.

Anthony Martial has played up front in the past season, but Meulensteen believes Kane would add even more quality to the side's front line.

He told talkSPORT: "What is vitally important is that United need to have a really good start to the season, so they don't lose any ground and they are in there and they can keep competing. That will grow the belief.

"I think with maybe another good signing, I keep saying they should bring in a really top, top striker. For instance, if they were able to get Kane – which I don't think they can – but if they could get Kane, I would say 'yes, they will compete for the title next year'."
