Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has sung the praises of Chris Smalling.

Van Gaal isn't surprised to see Smalling wanted in Italy by Roma after his successful loan last season.

He told TMW: “I worked with him, I can judge him.

“Great man, great professional. When he wasn't injured he always played."

Roma are pushing United to agree terms over a permanent deal for Smalling today.
