Ex-Man Utd assistant McClaren: Van Dijk only Liverpool player who'd make 1999 treble side

Former Manchester United assistant Steve McClaren believes only one current Liverpool player would make it in the club's 1999 treble winning side.

McClaren believes Virgil van Dijk is the only player who could play alongside one of United's greatest teams, that featured the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.

"Virgil van Dijk next to Jaap Stam, that would be invincible," the 58-year-old told Sky Sports News. "Nobody would get past them.

"But for me, seriously, only Van Dijk would get into that team.

'When you look at that Manchester United team, that is leadership throughout the whole team, and leadership was the key. Liverpool are developing that now."
