Ex-Liverpool coach Beale: Wilson always late developer

Former Liverpool coach Michael Beale is delighted seeing Harry Wilson prove his quality on-loan with Derby County.

Beale, now with Rangers, always knew Wilson would be a late developer.

"When I first came to Liverpool he was in the U16s and a little winger. Very quick, quite shy. Lovely left foot," he told the Daily Mail. "He was also part of a really talented team – Ryan Kent, Sheyi Ojo and we bought Sergi Canos in from Barcelona so we had four fantastic wingers.

"I always felt he would be slow burner because physically he was tiny. It is not so much the height but filling out so you don't get knocked over. Now he has filled out and is strong within his body and wins lots of free-kicks.

"The communication between me and Harry all the time was about the other boys maybe getting there quicker because they are physically more able than he was at the time but telling him he has just got to trust the process and keep working. It's you versus you every day.

"He is a real lesson to any player that is small at a young age that you will fill out. It is just about believing in yourself."
