Ex-Kilmarnock, Oldham midfielder McDonald joins St Johnstone

Gary McDonald has left Morecambe to join Scottish club St Johnstone.

The 31-year old midfielder returns to the Scottish Premier League following two years in England with the Shrimps and admits it was the influence of new Saints boss Tommy Wright, doubled with Europa League qualifiers, which got him across the line at McDiarmid Park.

"The interest first came to light when Steve (Lomas) was manager but Tommy had made it clear that he wanted me to sign," he said.

"He's been on at me quite a bit and made me feel really wanted.

"I was impressed by what he had to say and how he explained his plans for the club.

"He really sold the move to me, actually, and I just can't wait to get started now.

"St Johnstone are a good club, the lads did brilliantly last season to get into Europe and the reward for that comes in a few weeks' time.

"We'll get a few games in first and then be ready to go for whoever the draw throws up, but as a player you would much rather be thrown into competitive games than playing pre-season friendlies."

McDonald kicked off his career with Kilmarnock in 2001 before his first foray into English football when he moved to Oldham Athletic five years later. After that he joined Aberdeen, moved onto Hamilton Academical, and then to Morecambe in 2011.
