Ex-Feyenoord, Japan ace Ono to join Western Sydney

New A-League franchise Western Sydney Wanderers are set to sign Japanese veteran Shinji Ono.

The 33-year old former Japan international midfielder has been released by J-League outfit Shimizu S-Pulse in order to complete his move to the Wanderers who kick off their first campaign in early October.

Ono kicked off his career with Urawa Reds in 1998 before moving to Dutch club Feyenoord in 2001 where he became the first Japanese player to win a European title with the 2002 UEFA Cup.

That year he was also named the Asian Player of the Year before moving back to Urawa in 2006 and then onto Germany's VfL Bochum the following year. Ono then moved to Shimizu in 2010 and has now been granted permission to leave to continue his career in Australia.
