The defender is now on-loan at Everton from the Blues.
Hiddink told evertonfc.com, “As a player, Kurt is very committed, very strong and very fast.
“I did not work with him for as long as I would have wanted to… I thought so much of him.
“It was not only that he had such pace and power, he was intelligent and knew how to use his qualities. Sometimes as a player, you want to give the beautiful pass but he knew his main strength, which was his power.
“Not just in defence but you will see in offensive situations, at corners and free-kicks, he will contribute to the game.
“He was a very friendly, hard-working guy. He knew he had to do his work, then get the ball to those players to create higher up the pitch. And he did that very well, he understood the game and how to get the best from himself.
“He was very loyal and, technically, a very good player."
