Former Barcelona coach Louis van Gaal says Frenkie de Jong should be played at the back.

Van Gaal was speaking after Barca's defeat at Real Madrid. The Dutchman feels De Jong's passing range would benefit coach Quique Setien's system from defence.

He said, "He could do all that there. Frenkie de Jong should play as a central defender, because he did that at Ajax and was not so bad.

"Frenkie de Jong has speed. He also has the insight to defend and to go forward at the right moments."

Van Gaal also believes De Jong shouldn't have joined Barca, as he is too similar to Sergi Busquets.

He said of the former Ajax star: "And it shows. So Frenkie de Jong should have gone to Juventus."
