Ex-Barcelona coach Van Gaal blasts Overmars for calling to end season

Former Barcelona coach Louis van Gaal has slammed clubs calling for the season to be canceled.

Ajax technical director Marc Overmars recently urged the Dutch Football Association to call off the season and declare the Amsterdam side champions.

Yet Van Gaal didn't take kindly to that sentiment and feels that the winner should be decided on the pitch, with the help of football's governing bodies.

"UEFA and FIFA should be willing to adjust the rules and offer some room to manoeuvre," Van Gaal told Algemeen Dagblad.

"Then we can start working. Then we can expand next season a bit, with more games during the week.

"There are clubs who are using the coronavirus crisis for their own benefit," he added.

"After 25 games, there cannot be an arrangement for Ajax to be champions.

"AZ Alkmaar have the same number of points and we have played only three quarters of the season.

"Does that not matter? It makes no sense," he argued.
