Former Athletic Bilbao and Celta Vigo coach Luis Fernandez says Luis Enrique should've continued in the La Roja job.
Enrique stepped down after the World Cup to be replaced by Luis de la Fuente.
"It saddens me that he does not continue because I have a lot of respect for him," said the Frenchman.
"He could have put up with more, until the Euro Cup in Germany. I would have kept him, but they are decisions outside of me.
"I love his personality.
"It was a team with a lot of youth and a great coach. Their hallmark is possession but they lacked percussion. Perhaps they didn't have the right players for it, but they have talent and quality. I like to see Spain play I don't think it was at a low level.
"What will the Germans and Belgians say then? Spain has to grow and look for players who make a difference."
