Former AC Milan chief Umberto Gandini believes Leonardo's outburst against Gonzalo Higuain was out of character.
With Chelsea circling, Leonardo demanded better from the Argentine striker in a public criticism last week.
Gandini said: "Leonardo was clear and direct. The message is clear for Higuain the footballer and person. You're at Milan, you have a contract and you have to do your job. Then other problems arise.
"If they re-sign Higuain or not, this is also a problem for Juventus. Juventus cannot afford to have a player like Higuain who returns after a bankrupt season.
"I've known Leo for twenty years, I do not know if his words were strategy. His message was public, and this is not usual for him."
