Patrice Evra says it was the right decision not to give Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann the France captaincy.
Griezmann was overlooked for PSG star Kylian Mbappe by France coach Didier Deschamps for the country's new captain.
It's been suggested the decision left Griezmann furious and had him considering international retirement.
But former France fullback Evra said on RMC Sport: "We all have to stand behind him, he's now been chosen and the thing it won't change, that's the way it is. After Antoine (Griezmann) he's the one with the most appearances, but be careful: I think he's very intelligent.
"When Antoine will speak... Personally, when I was there, he didn't speak. He's the captain of the group due to his joie de vivre, but he's not one to make a speech before the game, he's not a unifier, he's not a leader. Afterwards, with his experience, you could give him the armband."
