The Blues left-back revealed the respect he has for the midfielder's personality, as well as praising the fact he is his own man at such a young age.
He told St. Domingo magazine: "It took me until my mid-twenties to feel comfortable in my own skin, to stop trying to figure what everyone else wanted.
"Tom doesn't need me to progress. It's like all of the young lads coming through, you have to let it happen naturally.
"There will be times when you give young players a little boost whether it's on the training ground or on the pitch.
"It's a funny one, I came through with the opposite. It was a lot of tough love."
