EVERTON v SWANSEA RECAP: Swansea begin Guidolin era with win over Toffees

Swansea handed new manager Francesco Guidolin a win in his first match in charge of the Welsh club as they defeated Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Swans opened scoring in the 17th minute when Gylfi Sigurdsson converted from the penalty spot after Andre Ayew was brought down in the box.

Everton responded nine minutes later with Gareth Barry's flick-on from a Toffees corner forcing Jack Cork to redirect the ball into his own net.

However, the visitors were back in front after 34 minutes with Ayew's strike deflecting past Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Seamus Coleman had a golden opportunity to snatch a late point for the Toffees, but he blasted his shot from close range over the bar in the final seconds.

TALKING POINTS

Swansea's players clearly responded to the mid-week managerial change, with an energetic first-half display that saw them controlling possession for the opening 45 minutes. It remains to be seen if Guidolin can continue to get that sort of effort and energy out of his squad as they attempt to steer clear of a relegation dog fight.

Everton defender John Stones has been the subject of ongoing transfer speculation this January and it may have affected his performance against Swansea. The England international was culpable for both goals, having his back past intercepted by Ayew prior to the penalty being given and deflecting the ball past Howard for Swansea's second.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Everton face Manchester City in the semi-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday, while Swansea travel to the Hawthorns to face West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.
