EVERTON V SUNDERLAND: Kone hat-trick hands Toffees big win over Black Cats

Arouna Kone scored a hat-trick as Everton defeated Sunderland 6-2 at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Gerard Deufoleu opened the scoring in the 19th minute, before Kone bagged his first to double Everton's advantage 12 minutes later.

Sunderland's response was emphatic however, with the Black Cats scoring either side of half-time through Jermaine Defoe and Steven Fletcher to draw level.

The Toffees turned the match back in their favour in a blistering eight-minute onslaught which saw a Sebastian Coates own goal followed by strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Kone.

Kone completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute to cap off Everton's impressive victory.

MATCH OVERVIEW
Everton: 6 (Deufoleu 19', Kone 31', 62', 76', Coates OG 55', Lukaku 60')

Sunderland: 2 (Defoe 45', Fletcher 50')
Goodison Park, Merseyside: 36,617

TALKING POINTS
The performance of Deufoleu was particularly impressive, with the Spaniard notching two assists to go with his goal. However, he was also booked for simulation in the second half, showing he still needs to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Sunderland were punished dearly for continuing to attack after drawing level in the 50th minute. Rather than trying to settle the match, the Black Cats continued to bomb forward in search of the lead, but were picked apart on the counter attack by Everton.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Everton travel to Upton Park to face West Ham on Saturday, while Sunderland host Southampton at the Stadium of Light.
