Everton U23 coach Unsworth can see Onyango pushing for senior call

Everton U23 coach David Unsworth says Tyler Onyango has a chance of breaking into the first team.

The 18 year-old played for Everton U23s against Leeds United this week. It was his first competitive game in six months following a serious ankle injury.

Unsworth told the Liverpool Echo: "He's been back training about two-and-a-half weeks.

"We had a 45-minute game against the first-team in the international break, he played the 45 then.

"He has looked good. He has looked really, really strong. We had an in-house game as well, for him, where he got 60 minutes. He's had 45 and then 60 and to then get 80 minutes in a proper game is fantastic.

"I just thought around 80 minutes he started to flag and what we didn't want was for him to get injured, but he played well."

When asked if working with the first-team should be Onyango's target for the season, Unsworth replied: "Tyler will tell you that's his own personal goal but that's down to Rafa and Duncan and the first-team staff.

"He is a great lad, a great, great lad. Nobody would ever wish the injury he suffered on any player but sometimes when a player does get injured at that young age, it gives them a period of time in the gym which helps them.

"He's put a lot of strength on, gained a lot of power, and now it's about getting him the minutes to showcase in front of Rafa and his team and hopefully he does that."
