Everton's Howard, Seattle Sounders' Dempsey nominated for player of the year

US Soccer has released the six names who have been put forward for the 2014 US Soccer Male Athlete of the Year.

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, Borussia Monchengladbach full-back Fabian Johnson and Nantes midfielder Alejandro Bedoya have been joined by MLS trio Clint Dempsey, Kyle Beckerman and Jermaine Jones for the top award.

The winner of this year's award will be voted on by 'national team and youth national team coaches and staff, national-team players who earned a cap in 2014, Major League Soccer and North American Soccer League head coaches, select media members, former players and administrators'.

All six players were regular members of Juergen Klinsmann's US side during the calendar year and all featured at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
