Everton, Newcastle, Watford all chasing Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta

A host of Premier League clubs are chasing Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The Evening Chronicle says the 21-year-old moved to the Bundesliga club from Lyon last summer, and impressed during his first season in Germany as he netted 14 goals in 29 starts.

Such prolific form has drawn envious glances from Everton, Newcastle, Watford, Southampton and Cardiff City, according to L'Equipe, and it is even claimed that the Magpies have had a bid in the region of £20million rejected for the France Under-21 international - with Mainz reportedly holding out for up to €40m (£35.6m) for Mateta.

However, such suggestions that Newcastle have actually had a cash offer for Mateta turned down appears unlikely, considering all significant transfer business has been placed on hold while manager Rafa Benitez's future is resolved.

Last year, the Magpies brought Yoshinori Muto to Tyneside from the Opel Arena in a £9.5m deal, and United have maintained a positive relationship with Mainz - who they also played in a pre-season friendly in 2017.
