Everton legend Ratcliffe: Our best managers are ex-Blues

Everton legend Kevin Ratcliffe believes a former player would be the ideal choice for manager.

Ratcliffe was delighted to see caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson lead the team to victory over Chelsea on Saturday in his first game in charge.

He wrote for the Daily Mail: "Show commitment and passion and the Goodison crowd will always get behind you but Everton won't want to play like that every week. It was a horse for a course. They'll want more style though the three points bought vital breathing space as they look for a new man to lead the club.

"Every manager that has won a trophy at Everton in the modern era has played for the club before. I'm not saying it's a prerequisite for the next appointment but the manager has to know the club. Everton will struggle to attract the Mauricio Pochettinos of this world without Champions League football so they have to be sure the next guy isn't here just for the money or publicity.

"For the short term at least they know it's in safe hands with Duncan."
