Everton hero Hinchcliffe impressed by youngster Luke Garbutt

Former Everton fullback Andy Hinchcliffe has been impressed by young left-back Luke Garbutt.

Hinchcliffe believes the former Leeds United trainee has done enough in his various outings to prove himself a worthy understudy to Leighton Baines.

The player-turned-pundit told evertonfc.com: "It is good to have a bit of competition. Leighton is clearly the first choice and rightly so, but it is great for Luke Garbutt to get the occasional game when Leighton is injured.

"You don't really want that to happen - you want Baines playing - but if he is out then you want a young player coming in, doing well and getting used to playing in the Premier League and the big competitions.

"It is vitally important for him and his future as well, because you never quite know what will happen. A player could get injured and you want to know that the replacement you put in there is more than capable. Luke is showing he can make that step up."
