Everton great Graham Sharp says their thrashing by Chelsea was a big wake-up call.
The Toffees had arrived at Stamford Bridge on an impressive run of just one defeat in seven games.
Sharp said: “The Chelsea defeat was a massive reality check and illustrated the work that needs to be done.
“We all know that when a new manager comes in you usually get an upsurge, a reaction from the players. We had it when Duncan Ferguson took charge after Marco Silva.
“I went down to Chelsea, thinking, yes, results have been better under him, but the problems hadn't gone away – the ones that have been there for three or four years.
“It was back to reality. It was a case of saying, 'Let's be honest, where are we going? What do we need to do? What players are going to be on the journey with the manager?'. It's given him a good look at what he has to do, where he has to go and who wants to be part of it.
“It looks like there will be a lot of activity in the summer. It's a difficult time, but, slowly but surely, he will get there and next season I would be very surprised if we go to Chelsea and lose 4-0."
