Everton boss Benitez: We must improve 5-10% in every department

Everton boss Rafa Benitez is frustrated losing two senior players to injury.

Benitez this week added a new fitness and rehab coach to his staff in Cristian Fernandez, a Spaniard he worked with at Newcastle.

On Tuesday, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Everton's outstanding player so far, had suffered a stress fracture that will sideline him for a minimum of four weeks; 24 hours later, Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a setback with a thigh issue that will rule him out for a similar period.

"We have a lot of people pushing and doing things right," said Benitez, whose side face Watford on Saturday. "The main thing will be the players. I am not stupid. It depends on the players what we do on the pitch. Then the rest of the people around will follow.

"I want to be sure every player understands what it means to play for this club and go on the pitch in front of the fans and give everything. They are doing that. I am happy with that and I think the fans also appreciate the effort of the players. But it has to be the same in each department.

"When you see the money spent, the club has to be in a much better position. You have to compete against all the other teams. I will be the first to make mistakes, but I have experience and I want to win. How can we win? By improving five per cent or 10 per cent in each department."
