EUROPA LEAGUE: Wigan holds Zulte-Waregem in European debut

Wigan Athletic have come away with a point following a hard-fought Europa League battle with Zulte-Waregem in Belgium on Thursday night.

The Latics, in their first-ever match in Europe, battled it out to force a 0-0 draw at the Jan Breydel Stadium to kick off their Group D campaign with something to show for.

Zulte, led by Chelsea loanee Thorgan Hazard, produced a lot of attacking intent but the Latics were able to hold out in front of 2,500 of their faithful in the driving rain to pick up an invaluable point on the road.

Wigan had a good early chance of their own with James McArthur skimmed the bar with a curling effort while James McClean came close to inadvertently heading a Hazard free-kick into his own goal.

Ryan Shotton's late effort for the Latics forced Sammy Bossut into a vital save but in the end the two sides shared the spoils in a dour evening in Bruges.
