Tottenham have been eliminated from the Europa League at the hands of Portuguese giants Benfica.
The north London club were beaten 3-1 by the Eagles at White Hart Lane last week, giving them a mountainous task in Lisbon tonight, which they were unable to climb.
Tottenham forced a 2-2 draw at Estadio da Luz thanks to Nacer Chadli's brace but the 5-3 aggregate threw them out of Europe's second tier club competition.
Benfica opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Ezequiel Garay rose above his marker to head home Eduardo Salvio's cross from the right which had Jorge Jesus' men 4-1 ahead overall.
Spurs needed to throw men forward if they were any chance of getting back into the tie but it took them until the 78th minute to score when Chadli unleashed a ferocious drive from beyond 20 yards which gave Benfica gloveman Jan Oblak no chance.
Tottenham then struck again a minute later through Belgian winger Chadli who controlled a knockdown from Harry Kane before turning swiftly and rocketing into the back of his net with a left-footed half-volley.
The visitors kept pushing and pressing for the goal that would have seen them progress to the quarter-finals with a number of efforts on goal in the dying stages but their attempts proved futile when Rodrigo Lima was brought by Sandro in the area and picked himself up to convert from the penalty spot deep into injury-time.
The two-legged loss will now allow Spurs to focus on their Premier League duties as they chase a top-four finish while Benfica have reached the final eight which includes AZ Alkmaar, Valencia, Lyon and Juventus.
